Leading experts have written in the Irish Medical Journal that, in the wake of the Cass Review in the UK, Ireland’s services for gender diverse children must be led by child and adolescent psychiatrists and pediatricians – which would be in contrast to the gender-affirming pathway that had been favoured by clinics such as Tavistock, an approach which studies and reviews suggest may be harmful.
And they warned that to “safeguard” young people with gender dysphoria, there should be an emphasis on the imperative in the Hippocratic Oath to medics to ‘First, Do No Harm’.
