By now most readers will be aware that Dublin City Council issued a statement on Friday announcing that it was not going to instruct Council workers to remove the many hundreds of tricolours that have brightened up the streets and roads over the past number of months.
They insist that this would be “counterproductive.” Rather than follow in the footsteps of Cork City Council which did issue such a directive, the guardians of Dublin City’s civic space have decided that instead they will strive to inculcate a “deeper understanding of the Irish flag — its history, its meaning, and its enduring message of inclusion, equality and respect,” and “the shared responsibility we each have in building an inclusive and welcoming city.”
