A Dún Laoghaire County Councillor who posted a Twitter poll asking if Dún Laoghaire needed to change its name to become more inclusive has received a resounding NO from more than 11,000 votes.
Green Cllr Daniel Dunne provoked a big response when he said “Public Consultation: We’ve been using the Irish version for 100 years. But shouldn’t we be more inclusive? What should we call our county town going forward?
With more than 11,000 votes as at midday today, some 92% of people thought the name should not be changed. Cllr Dunne also received hundreds of comments – most of them negative.
Some people felt it was more ‘wokeness’ from the Greens.
How about Wokeville?

Others said that even “a Brit living in Dublin” found the suggestion ludicrous.
Some responses were succinct:

While some pointed to the wider picture.
Cllr Dunne eventually explained he was only joking – but that tweet seemed to be lost in the storm.
Bhí mé ag magadh. An bhfuil ciall don ghreann ag éinne ar an suíomh seo?

Maybe he’s not funny.
Maybe it's the way you tell 'em?

Or maybe there’s no room for humour on Twitter.
