Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe Dead After Shooting

Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was shot during an election campaign rally in Nara city today at 11:30am local time. 

Japanese media outlets have reported that two shots were discharged from a handmade firearm. 

A man in his 40s, and who initial reports have alleged is a former member of Japan’s Self Defense Forces, has been taken into custody after being apprehended at the scene. 

Abe (67)  was hit from behind in the left side of the chest, and neck.  

He was rushed to hospital, arriving within 30 minutes of the attack, but has since been pronounced dead. . 

The shooting has sent shockwaves around the world as Japan has a zero tolerance approach to firearms, and boasts one of the lowest gun crime rates in the world. 

Before his death was confirmed, Nihon Tele News reported officials close to the former Prime Minister have said they are unable to comment on the specifics of Abe’s condition, but that he was receiving emergency care. 

Japanese politicians have vowed not to let the attack disrupt election campaigning.
