A group of protestors assembled outside the Irish Medical Council (IMC) offices before marching to Leinster House this afternoon in support of Dr. Marcus de Brún.
Gript understands that a letter, along with a petition, was handed in to the Dáil this afternoon.
Dr. de Brún, a former member of the Medical Council, is facing fitness to practice related sanctions from the regulatory body in relation to allegations that he failed “to promote official COVID 19 policies and vaccination campaigns”, according to a statement released on his behalf.
De Brún publicly criticised a number of medical protocols during the lockdown period, and was particularly critical of the handling of elderly patients in hospitals and nursing homes.
At the time he stated that “unquestionably the most vulnerable cohort of patients in Ireland are those residents of nursing homes”.
The Dublin based doctor resigned from the IMC in 2020 in protest at what he has described as “widespread and preventable deaths in the Irish nursing home sector,”.
This afternoon de Brún and a group of his supporters including fellow medical professionals, TD Mattie McGrath, a number of councillors, and members of the public gathered for speeches to be made outside IMC buildings.
Speaking during a livestream of the protest by the Irish Inquiry, Cork Independent Cllr. Peter O’Donoghue said that de Brún was amongst a few doctors “who were very brave” and “called out what was happening” during the covid lockdowns, and has how found himself “ostracised within the medical world”.
“He could see what was happening in the nursing homes,” he said.
“He’s not alone, there are many other doctors with him,” he added.
O’Donoghue said he felt it was important for him to attend today’s gathering to express support for the “brave doctors” who “went above and beyond to tell the truth”.
“If Dr. Marcus de Brún is struck off as a doctor as a result of questioning what happened [during covid] then this will set a very, very dangerous precedent in this country,”.
Also in attendance, Derry based GP Dr, Anne McCloskey, who was jailed for refusing to pay a fine of £255, said that, “Everyone of us here is here because we care about our country” and “because we care about people.”
A member of the Hold the Line demonstration group in attendance said that doctors like de Brún “put their livelihood on the line” to speak out about their dissatisfaction of how lockdown measures were implemented.
