The government has no current centralised records of Ireland’s total NGO spending, even after defunding the only group that kept tabs on the figures, Gript can reveal.
According to 2021 figures – the most recent data available – the Irish state spends a total of €5.9 billion euros per year on its NGO industry. This information was compiled by an NGO called Benefacts, whose sole purpose was to keep track of spending on Ireland’s non-profit sector.
