The garda said that while the injuries were initially reported as being due to a fall, an internal investigation led to gardaí obtained video evidence which Garda Murphy described to the court as “sickening”.
He also said when the accused – who was arrested at his home address and detained for questioning – claimed that “he was frustrated on the day” and that “was the mitigation he gave during interview”.
The garda objected to bail, saying the childcare worker was from another EU country and was a flight risk – adding that the accused had left Ireland from time to time to return to his native country in recent years.
The court also heard that the accused had worked here for several years and Judge Michael Ramsey set bail at €1,100 under condition that the man obey a curfew at his home, sign on daily at a local garda station, and have no contact with the child’s family or staff from the crèche. The accused has also surrendered his passport and was told he must remain in this jurisdiction.
The accused was granted free legal aid was granted, and the judge requested a translator for future court appearances.
