A Sudanese man has appeared in court via video link in Belfast charged with the attempted murder of Stephen Ogilvie.
Hadi Alodid, 30, has been named as the suspect in the attempted murder of Mr Ogilvie. He appeared via a video link and was assisted by an Arabic interpreter.
Mr Ogilvie, who is in his forties, was on Tuesday night identified as the victim of the “brutal” attack. Belfast Magistrates Court heard this morning that he has lost his left eye, and sustained severe damage to his right eye, along with serious injuries to his back.
The court heard that Mr Alodid has no family ties to Northern Ireland, and that he is from Sudan.
When asked if he wanted to say anything in response to the charges, he gave no reply. He declined legal representation.
Mr Alodid, with an address in Duncairn Avenue in north Belfast, is also charged with the possession of a knife in a public place and threats to kill an NHS worker.
Mr Alodid was remanded into custody to appear before the court again on Wednesday 8th July.
The judge said that thoughts were with the victim and his family, along with those in the emergency services and members of the public who helped the victim amidst danger.
