Backpack hero in French knife attack is Catholic pilgrim

A young man who intervened in the knife attack which took place at a park in Annecy, France yesterday is being hailed as a hero.

The 24 year old named Henri Guaino was on a month long cathedral tour when he was confronted by the violent scenes which saw a Syrian migrant who had been refused asylum in France go on a rampage stabbing four nursery age children and two adults.

Frenchman Henri who is appearing on social media dubbed ‘the backpack hero’ or ‘“le héros au sac à dos” said he believes it was God’s will that he was there at the time of the “abominable” attack.

Speaking to CNEWS the philosophy student said, “All I know is that I was not there by chance.”

“On my journey to the cathedrals I crossed paths with this man and I have acted instinctively.”

“It was unthinkable to do nothing,” he said

The young man, a devout Catholic, said that he felt a strong force urging him into action when he saw the danger the children were in.

“I let myself be guided by providence and the Virgin Mary,” he said adding, “I said my adieu. They would decide what would happen,”

In response to the reports that the attacker was also Christian Henri said that this did not stand to reason.

“It is profoundly unchristian to attack the vulnerable,” he said

“The entire Christian civilisation on which our country is built is a knightly message to defend widows and orphans. I think that, on the contrary, something very bad inhabited him.”

Commenting on his mental state in the aftermath of the attack Henri said, “I now have all these horrible images in my head. I need to try and turn that into something positive,”

In spite of his ordeal Henri says he will continue on his cathedral tour, saying that  “the beauty of the cathedrals can nourish us and help us do the right thing”

Henri is due to meet French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday.

As Gript previously reported, the attack took place in a scenic park in the Alpine town of Annecy.

Two of the four injured children aged between 22 months and 3 years old were seriously wounded
