The Alternative for Germany (AfD) is on course to win the most votes in a German state election for the second time this month, with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz describing the failure of his party, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), to reach the 5% threshold to enter parliament at the weekend as a “disaster”.
In the north-eastern state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, AfD topped the poll according to the preliminary results from the weekend, gaining 38.2% of the vote, with the centre-left SPD coming a close second with 35.5%. The Leftist Die Linke won 6.5%, and the CDU – who lead the current Coalition government, registering at 4.9%, the party’s worst ever result in the area.
