Are these her “golden years”. A photo of a homeless elderly lady eating her dinner at a window sill on the streets of Dublin has revealed the extent of the crisis in Ireland.

The particular frailty of elderly people is often overlooked in the discussion, those working with homeless people said.  The image moved them to despair they posted on Twitter.

The heartbreaking photo shows an elderly lady standing in the cold, on the street, eating her dinner from a plastic plate on a window sill. The volunteers who provided her with dinner said she eats there every week.

Posting the photo Homeless Street Café said:

“People always want to talk to us about the children we meet and how sad that is. If I’m honest, I find the older generation that use our service even more heartbreaking,” they wrote.

“It seems there is no time left for change for them,  a death of hope really.”

“To be living in food or heat poverty at their age, relying on a soup kitchen for necessities is horrifying to witness.

“I watch this woman eat her meal from a plastic bowl on a window sill every week, and I despair that this is her ‘golden years'”, the volunteer wrote.
