There has been a notable increase in the number of Somalis who are arriving in the state to claim asylum. Up to June 21 there had been 1,429 new applications from Somalis who now make up by far the main nationality, surpassing Nigerians who have been at the top of the leader board over many years.
There were 2,201 applications from Somalis in 2025 and that figure looks on course to be topped by the end of 2026. In 2024, there were 1,307 applications, 75% of which were accepted on arrival and there would appear to have been almost as high a success rate for those which were reviewed.
