The Republic of Ireland was struck by not one but two security controversies last week, both of which should ring alarm bells about the state’s ability to manage who enters the state.
On Thursday, Gardaí arrested Ukrainian-born civil servant Yevgen McKeeffe following an investigation by the Garda Special Detective Unit (SDU) at Dublin Airport. McKeeffe, a junior-grade IT worker, has been charged under Section 9 of the Criminal Justice Act for allegedly passing on information obtained through his official position. If convicted, he could face a prison sentence of up to ten years.
