People think nothing of sports coaches chopping, changing and altering the composition of their teams. Indeed, as spectators it is often we who call for such changes. There can also be significant personnel change in active private sector organisations.
In 1991, I left Ireland to do missionary work bringing capitalism to the former East Germany. I was made financial controller of a large industrial bakery in Saxony-Anhalt that had been bought by a US multinational. Within 6 weeks of taking over we had reduced the size of the workforce by two thirds and were simultaneously planning a major investment programme to double output.
