The Association of Secondary Teachers in Ireland says it is the “main second level teachers union and represents 20,200 teachers in community schools, community colleges, comprehensive schools and voluntary secondary schools”.
It is an organisation, then, which clearly has considerable heft and influence. On Friday, in a ruling from the Court of Appeal on a case taken by probably the country’s most well-known teacher, Enoch Burke, public comments from the ASTI in regard to transgender issues became a key factor in deciding Mr Burke’s appeal regarding his dismissal from Wilson’s Hospital School.
