Demonstrations took place in Limerick City and Ardee, County Louth over the weekend with participants chanting slogans such as “Whose streets? Our streets!” while many carried tricolours.
In Limerick, thousands marched in a Limerick Says No rally opposing the government’s immigration policy, as chants of “What do we want? Mass deportations! When do we want it? Now! rang out.
A smaller counter demonstration was also held with attendees, some of whom were holding Palestinian flags and other Gaza related paraphernalia, chanted “Say it loud, say it clear, refugees are welcome here!”
In Ardee, County Louth, demonstrators expressed concerns over the use of a protected structure, the Ferdia Arms, as a migrant accommodation centre.
As reported by the Dundalk Democrat, the building has been the subject of appeals to An Bord Pleanála “for reasons including economic concerns and the preservation of the building’s heritage”.
