Fianna Fáil Councillor for Donaghmede, Daryl Barron has released a statement within the last hour indicating that the “The Department of Justice is no longer considering the offer of a potential IPAS accommodation centre at the former Crown Paints site in Coolock in Dublin.”
Councillor Barron confirmed to Gript that the offer was being withdrawn and he hoped that the “community could now move on” following the long drawn out and contentious proposal to place a large IPAS accommodation centre run by Townbe on the former paint factory site.
He said that he had been engaged with the community over the past 12 months and that this had come to the conclusion that the site was “not a suitable option for anyone seeking accommodation.” He said that this had also been the conclusion reached following a Departmental review.
The Department stated that “The prolonged nature of this particular proposal’s progress through development and planning stages have been significant factors in the decision to discontinue the appraisal of this offer.”
The Department statement shared by Councillor Barron ends by pointing out that “Consideration is also given to the location and locality, access to services, resident welfare, health and well-being, and the current level of need in the sector.”
This is a huge development in the case which is set to return to Court in July and Gript shall have further updates regarding possible plans for the future use of the site.
It is clear, however, that the local objections and the case taken by local people against the proposal have borne fruit. As have the efforts of local representatives who did engage with the community.
