In a radio interview on RTÉ yesterday, Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan said that 65% of more than 14,000 applications for International Protection in 2024 had been rejected. He also referred to the fact that 80% of applications made in the first two months of this year had been turned down.
We have referred several times before to the statistics on applications for asylum and have noted that while there has consistently been a high rate of initial rejections, that many of these are overturned on appeal. We have also noted that there is a considerable discrepancy between the rates of rejection and acceptance depending on country of origin.
