Hot off the press: Generation Z are more conservative and less slutty than Millennials. Generation Z, also known as Zoomers, are those born between 1997 and 2012. Millennials – for those of you who do not speak American generational slang – were born between 1981 and 1996. Therefore I am a Millennial by four days although I am not very representative of them. The Millennials were once known for their woke views and snowflake ways, being the generation that drove demand for modern LGBT rights and DEI initiatives and free abortions with your breakfast cereal, and everything else that annoyed social conservatives over the past few decades. They were the demented generation. Perhaps it should come as no surprise that Generation Z are less demented and have more conservative attitudes to some issues than the Millennials.
The Times have a survey out with some interesting numbers. “The Times Generation Z study revealed that only a fifth of 18 to 27-year-olds believed that marriage was “irrelevant”, while a third thought it better for a couple to be married before having children.”
So there is nothing inevitable in young people believing marriage is irrelevant.
There was also a big swing against one night stands. “The Times survey’s findings on casual relationships showed a big change over the past two decades: Generation Z was far more conservative than the millennial generation that came before them.
Only 23 per cent of 18 to 27-year-olds said their friends commonly had sex on a one-night stand — a steep fall from the 78 per cent of millennials who said yes to that question 20 years ago.”
So 78% to 23% is a huge drop when it comes to ‘friends commonly have one – night stands.’
One young woman interviewed, Charlie Sawyer said she and her friends were less against casual relationships than the survey suggested but accepted that it was harder to be interested in casual dating because of how “awful” dating apps were. She added, “If I was in a relationship right now I’d want to stay in it longer, because the grass definitely isn’t always greener when it comes to dating nowadays.”
This is interesting. The message has certainly landed with Generation Z that it is a jungle out there. This taken with the previous finding that young women in particular were more likely to identify as bisexual, I stand by my speculative opinion that this is down to pornography and its impact on the sexual demands of young men. The culture is turning young women bisexual. It is also making them less slutty.
Taken together the survey on sexuality means that Generation Z young women are less slutty and more likely to be bisexual than Millennials. This is a reflection that one night stands, especially with men, are not worthwhile experiences and instead something to be avoided. Millennials grew up with Sex and the City but Generation Z seem to inhabit a Fatal Attraction universe.
However, I think the Times is missing something and that is what is the definition of a one night stand? If you are an early bird Millennial like me, the one night stand you might look back wistfully upon (not me mind, sadly) is a different beast entirely to your one night stand circa 2025.
A one night stand in say 2005 (if you are born in 1985 you turn 20 in 2005) could be anything from someone you met on the internet (which was just about coming to life then) to someone you met in a bar, flirted with all night and decided to go home with. It could be someone you have known for a while, had your eye on, you know their cousin twice removed and one night after a long time chatting at O’Neill’s you get lucky.
Indeed, a one night stand (being a lawyer I am stickler for definitions) is any sex with any person you are not in a relationship with. So this includes the nice guy you have flirted with at university/work/the friend of a friend/ your brother’s mate/a long-time friend you have suddenly realised is wonderful and you want to move into lover-vile up to and including some psycho you have swiped right on.
In 2005 I reckon most people were having one night stands with the person they flirted with for a while and then ended up in the pub together. In 2025 the one night stand is probably the psycho you have never met before and you will never meet again and one desperate lonely night you swiped right. I’m not judging, you do you, but I’m not sure that is a fair comparison.
The 2005 one stand has familiarity and security about him. You might share the same crowd and there is some intimacy about that. There is a good chance you will see each other again. This is not the same as the 2025 one night stand.
2025 bloke is far more likely to be a complete psycho and demand something vile straight out of whatever filth he was watching on Only Fans. The one night stand blokes of 2005 were not raised on extreme porn. They weren’t watching group sex on their mobile phone every night of the week from the age of 14. Sadly, the same cannot be said of 2025 one night stand man.
So no wonder Millennial women are far less likely to be sluts nor should it be a surprise that a much higher percentage have sworn off men entirely playing the ‘bisexual card.’
Of course the grass is not greener on the outside of a relationship. What we are seeing in fact is not just the long term and much documented demise of the relationship but the death of the one night stand as well. That’s many a cold evening for the youth, especially in Ireland.
The modern one night stand is far less sexier and much more riskier than the one night stand of old. In fact, we are not even comparing like for like. Previously women had to worry about getting pregnant. These days they have to worry about being choked.
No wonder it has lost its attraction.
