So it turns out that political campaigns are rather expensive, and you need a fair bit of money to contest them. This is even more true than usual if you are, say, a former Fine Gael TD turned independent candidate in one of the richest Dáil constituencies in Ireland, which is why Kate O’Connell has launched a gofundme to raise €10,000 for her upcoming campaign to get back into the Dáil.
In fairness, the fundraiser has been remarkably successful: Our Kate has smashed through her €10k goal in a matter of days, helped by some hefty chunks of change being dropped by her supporters. Indeed, that 10k has been raised from only 30 supporters at the time of writing, leaving an average donation so far of €333 per person – it’s good to have generous friends.
