The deluge of, frequently grotesque, AI imagery distorting the internet is becoming a real problem. If it doesn’t have any measurable social or political effects any time soon, which I very much doubt, it’s fair to say that it’s already having a spiritual effect; offering us hollow, uncanny imaginings in place of truth and beauty.
A brief scroll through a couple of social media feeds this morning was the straw that broke the camel’s back, prompting the writing of this article, as I came across an account on X posting engagement-bait that purports to be a black and white image of a couple on their wedding day at some point decades ago, alongside a more ‘recent’ image of the couple.
