A mother who was discovered by Gardaí in a “in a bloodied, tortured and beaten state” needed 5 staples in her head to treat a large laceration among other injuries from what Gardaí say was “a sustained and violent assault”.
Journalist Tom Tuite reported that the woman was allegedly subjected to torture where a “makeshift blowtorch”, a hatchet, iron bars, a blade, and heated hammerheads were used.
Eight men have been accused of participating in the torture of the woman, the latest of whom Emmet Black, 48, of the Maltings, Dublin 8, has been charged with false imprisonment and assault causing harm to the woman, 37, at Henrietta House, Dublin 7.
Black was denied bail at a sitting of Dublin district Court yesterday by Judge Alan Mitchell.
The court heard that the alleged victim is still receiving treatment in hospital and was unable to attend the bail hearing.
Garda Ciaran Rogers told the court that the violence allegedly unleashed on the woman, who is a mother, only stopped as Gardaí entered the premises and that Black, who needed medical treatment before Gardaí could interview him, was caught “red handed”.
The woman alleged that Black cut her legs with a blade.
Defence solicitor Eoin Lysagh maintained that his client had been pressured into participating in the alleged violence.
The woman alleges that she was escorted to the flat in a car with 5 men of whom Black was one, with the court hearing that the ordeal lasted over one-and-half-hours where she was “beaten around the head and body with a hatchet, irons bars, she was violently attacked with a blade”.
The woman sustained a broken elbow and cheekbone and required surgery and five staples to a large laceration on her head.
Gardaí also gave evidence that the woman had burns on both legs from a “makeshift” blowtorch made from an aerosol can and lighter as well as “heated hammerheads placed on the bare skin”.
