Some weeks ago, I wrote an article about the people your kids are probably watching on YouTube, foremost among them being the world’s biggest YouTuber, ‘Mr Beast’, who boasts an incredible 317 million subscribers, his videos garnering hundreds of millions of views each.
He produces a variety of content, from pure clickbait that, admittedly, delivers on its titles – ‘I spent 7 days buried alive’, ‘$1 vs $100,000,000 House!’, that sort of thing – to what has been described as “stunt philanthropy”, with videos like ‘I Built 100 Wells In Africa’ and ‘1,000 Deaf People Hear For The First Time’ aplenty. The man likely to be YouTube’s first billionaire (already raking in approximately $700 million per year) knows how to capture the attention of the world’s youth.
