From time to time, I get an email in to Gript with a familiar complaint about the state of the country: Why, the usually exasperated writer asks, do we put up with so much? Look at the French, they’ll say: A politician steps a foot out of line and they’ll set something on fire. Look at the Italians, fewer of them note, where Prime Ministers are lucky to last a year or two in office. Even in the UK, relatively minor Government misdeeds result in mandatory resignations. Here? Ah, sure, what do you expect.
I don’t really have an answer to that but I’ll posit a semi-serious theory: The weather. Consider this paragraph in the Irish Times, yesterday:
