The European Union must prepare for “the next pandemic” by establishing an “EU Health Force”, according to the European Election manifesto of the Green Party.
The document, which was released last Friday, says that one of the party’s goals is to “promote the creation of an EU Health Force for cooperation that could coordinate for health emergencies and disasters.”
“[We will] ensure the EU is ready for the next pandemic, through greater coordination of health systems, research and drug testing and manufacturing,” the text reads.
“[We will] further EU health policy integration to ensure the Union is ready for the next pandemic, including greater cooperation with WHO, national health agencies and a clearer medication testing and deployment capacity.”
The party also calls to “promote research into Long Covid and its effects”, and praises the fact that the EU was able to “continue spending” during the pandemic.
“[We will] continue the fight for Eurobonds as the best insurance against the boom and bust cycle, and push for the extension of the Next Generation EU recovery fund until they are delivered,” the party says.
“The EU failed the political test of the 2008 economic collapse, but succeeded in the face of the global pandemic, stabilising European economies and allowing them to continue spending at a time of need. The EU’s budgetary policy needs to learn these lessons and ensure the MFF contains strong counter-cyclical elements. Only with this can we move from ‘austerity Europe’ to ‘social Europe’.”
The news comes after the Fianna Fáil European election manifesto, which was released on the same day, similarly outlined plans to make EU-wide preparations in case of “another pandemic”, including sharing new legal competencies with Brussels in the area of public health, among other policies.
