It’s a good long while since yours truly has been inside the hallowed halls of Leinster House, and it’s adjacent office building, LH2000, which is home to the offices of our TDs and Senators, and is where most of the committee meetings of the Oireachtas are held. Part of the reason for not going there is geographical, given that I live miles from the capital. Part of it, though, is that it’s easier to be objective about the madhouse from the outside, without voluntarily committing oneself as one of the patients.
One of the problems with familiarity is that it does not only breed contempt, but acceptance. When you spend every day of your life in a place, things that you might otherwise question simply become part of the furniture. The photograph above, taken by my colleague Fatima yesterday at an event to mark international women’s day, is a good example of that.
