A member of the Irish Defense forces has been killed and a second is in a critical condition after a convoy was attacked by small fire in what has been described as an unprovoked assault.
It was reported that the convoy of eight soldiers travelling in armoured utility vehicles was attacked in Beirut, Lebanon at around 11.15pm or -9.15pm Irish time last night.
It is with deep regret that Óglaigh na hÉireann can confirm the death of one of our peacekeepers in a serious incident in Lebanon last night.

Óglaigh na hÉireann said, “On 14 December 2022 at approx 2115hrs (Irish time), a serious incident took place involving members of 121st Infantry Battalion, UNIFIL.”
“4 personnel were taken to Raee Hospital, near Sidon as a result of the incident. One soldier was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital and another has undergone surgery and is in a serious condition. The other two soldiers are being treated for minor injuries.”
Taoiseach Michael Martin said he was “Deeply shocked and saddened at the loss of life” while saying that the incident was a reminder of the sacrifice made by the Irish peacekeeping mission.
The Taoiseach said the defence forces are working in a “hostile difficult dangerous environment” while extending his “deepest sympathy” to the family of the deceased, and injured soldier.
Martin continued that the losses occurred at the “worst possible news this time of year” and that the service of the defence forces overseas brings great dignity and distinction to the country.
Óglaigh na hÉireann has said that although the families of those involved have been informed names will not be released at this time.
