The attack happened in the Ardoyne area of north Belfast last night.
A 29-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder following the killing of a two-month-old baby and serious injuries caused to a two-year-old child in Belfast.
The injured child is now in intensive care, whilst reports suggest the children’s mother suffered injuries too.
Police discovered the injured baby and infant after 8pm last night at a house in Brompton Park, with emergency services pronouncing the baby to be dead shortly after at the scene.
“Despite the efforts of the emergency services the baby was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. The other young child was taken to hospital and remains in intensive care,” a police statement read.
“A 29-year-woman who was also in the house has been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder and remains in custody at this time. Our thoughts are with the baby’s family, who are being supported by Family Liaison Officers.”

Fr Gary Donegan, who was previously based in north Belfast, said on Twitter: “Following the tragic death of a child while another remains critical, our prayers are with the good people of Ardoyne tonight.”
North Belfast MP John Finucane said “our thoughts are with all those involved”.
“The community of Ardoyne and beyond are shocked and heartbroken as the police have now confirmed the murder of a young child and another in critical condition,” he said at the scene.
“The thoughts of all of our community are with the family involved.
“I would also appeal to everyone to be mindful of what has happened and not to post or share anything which would add to the distress of those involved or the local community.”
DUP leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson said it was “tragic news” and that his “prayers are with all involved.”
SDLP leader Colum Eastwood said he had “never met a stronger community than the people of Ardoyne. We’re all thinking of you tonight.”
