Fianna Fáil byelection candidate Deirdre Conroy has admitted that her government essentially rubber stamps orders from NPHET when it comes to their covid response.
Speaking on Virgin Media’s The Tonight Show, Conroy was pressed by Matt Cooper on the way her government has handled NPHET’s advice.
“You seem to imply there that you regard NPHET as making the decisions,” said Cooper.
“That effectively the government rubber stamps the recommendations of NPHET. Is that the correct way of going about things?”
Conroy appeared flustered.
“Well, they are the experts,” she said.
“The government will then be in communication and participation with them, but definitely, yes, that is the expert advice on healthcare, especially to do with covid.”

Now, let’s not forget that this is the same NPHET who at the start of the year said that until every single person in Ireland is vaccinated, we have to act like nobody is. In other words, we have to continue the lockdown until everybody on the island is jabbed – and God knows when that will be.

This is the same NPHET that has declared an absolutely bizarre fatwa on antigen testing, and chastised the general public for celebrating an outdoor summer that they told us to have.

Drove into Dublin City Centre to collect someone from work at 815 PM. Absolutely shocked at scenes in South Great George’s St, Exchequer St, South William St area. Enormous crowds- like a major open air party. This is what we do not need when we have made so much progress.

This is despite no increase in cases following street party scenes.

They are lockdown addicts. And now Fianna Fáil’s election candidate has just declared to us all that she and her government basically just do whatever this body tells them.
Assuming that’s true, as the Fianna Fáil candidate claims, then why should anyone elect Deirdre Conroy? In fact, why should we elect anyone from the government parties?
This confession is almost like an admittance of the government’s irrelevance in the decision-making process of our country. They’re openly telling us that they have abdicated all responsibility over what happens to the state. If that’s the case, what do we need them for? We may as well sack them all and give their salaries directly to NPHET – cut out the middle man.
The reason people elect politicians is to make judgements of national importance on our behalf for the betterment of our communities and society at large. If those same elected officials are now telling us that they don’t do this, but instead take their marching orders from a bunch of unelected health experts, then why not do away with elections altogether and just usher in some kind of technocratic state? We may as well just come out with it and accept we live under a medical monarchy, with King Tony Holohan (Peace Be Upon Him) at the helm.
Of all the election approaches I can think of, going on TV to say you do whatever you’re told by unaccountable bureaucrats might not be the best strategy.
