US tourist in her 80s injured during mugging incident in Kerry

Gardaí in Kerry are investigating an incident in which an American tourist in her late 80s sustained injuries during a mugging incident which took place in the Port Road area of Killarney.

It is understood that the woman is visiting Kerry with her husband.

The incident took place at approximately 8:40 pm with the elderly woman being knocked to the ground after a man pulled her handbag from her before fleeing the scene.

It is understood that the man dropped the lady’s bag after jumping over a wall near the Deenagh River  but removed cash from inside it before making his escape.

The Kerryman reported that the woman is understood to have sustained a broken arm and head injuries.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to the assault and robbery as well as anyone who might be in possession of dash-cam footage of the Port Road area between 8:30pm – 9pm.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Killarney Garda Station at 064 6671160, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station

Last summer after a spate of attacks on US tourists in Ireland the US Embassy issued a warning to American citizens visiting Ireland.

As Gript previously reported, the U.S. Embassy said it “reminds U.S. citizens to exercise good personal security practices while traveling,” while advising travelers to “safeguard valuables, such as credit cards and passports, and refrain from carrying large amounts of cash.”

The U.S. Embassy Dublin said it “encourages all citizens to be aware of their surroundings, especially when traveling in unfamiliar places, crowded locations, empty streets, or at night,”

The security alert also advised that individuals take steps to avoid becoming victims of pickpocketing and “snatch and grab” robberies of jewellery, phones, and watches.

Appealing for information and no description of the culprit. If the individual was irish, we would have had a full description.

That’s a shame. What is? The incident where the tourist was attacked, of course, but more so that the Irish have allowed their country to be overrun by immigrants who have no interest in assimilating into your culture. I’m from the US and the reason I’m posting here is that the elderly woman is the mother of a family friend and we’re all pretty appalled by the situation.

Killarney has been majorly culturally enriched in recent times. I wonder is there any connection.

Yes, Killarney has been culturally enriched in recent times. The victims (the very elderly woman and husband) will confirm this assertion to you. No doubt this is a despicable crime and a very unpleasant experience for the victims. If there is any positive note the elderly woman and her husband took from their visit to Ireland, it comes from the ‘culturally enrichment of Killarney’ in recent times. I hope the Gardai apprehend this horrible human being.

Tourism dropping off a cliff, restaurants closing more now than ever and hotels being crammed with illegals.

Sorry for Kilarney but remember the Healy Rays are making a killing off housing scammer ukrainians.Dont vote them again.

Did the old woman see the colour of the man or woman. Was the mugger in a wheelchair or walking. Was the mugger 3 foot 2 or maybe 6 foot tall. A little more imformation there Kerry Police. Is this dash cam nonsense a way of doing nothing and not proceeding with any investigation?

The State has enabled the huge increase in theft and other crimes committed by the Roma (check any state stats-newspaper reports, garda and court reports etc FACT !!!) AND OTHER CRIMINAL GANGS, from E.Europe, Nigeria and Chinese (ALL FACTS !!) This fffgg regime, the government(?), has sullied and dishonoured my country’s good name, that we, the Irish, have developed and cultivated over generations. Now, this gang of boorish goons and yobs, in a few short years have befouled our proud Irish character. “Cead Mile shekels” is their seedy slogan. Let you continue your trek to Hell, if you must, but do NOT take us, Irish, with you.

can this government be sued in court for allowing anything and everything in to our beautiful little island, asking for American Irish friends 👍💚💚💚😀

Tourists should be warned that Killarney is now an international Asylum centre and longer inhabited by old Irish men on Jarveys and rowing boats. This is what the Greens have done to Irish tourism, Galway is starting to look much the same.

Disgraceful, Killarney was always a nice little town.Thrash of the planet there now.Its obvious now that the gov couldn’t give a flying shite about the once prosperous tourism industry Countrywide. Its more lucrative to take in nobody’s/anybody’s.

I give it 5 years and the Americans will stop coming….
Also, younger ones aren’t interested in the “Irish American” nonsense.

Maybe the Government thinks the same and has decided, as it’s in decline, now’s a good time to bury the tourist industry

As an American who has spent almost a year over the past 3 1/2 years in Ireland ( 7 months as a covid refugee) I’ve become disenchanted with Ireland over all. Granted, when the weather is nice, LOL, Ireland can be special, visually.
Other than that, weeks of rain and gale force winds, mind-boggling prices for food and booze, a police force seemingly hell bent on controlling the minutiae of ordinary citizens lives, an inept government who drives neoliberal thought to the point of irrational thought and magical thinking, I’ll pass on future travel to a country on the verge of sovereign collapse.

Are you the M.G. that used to be on the Hard Shoulder with George Hooke by any chance? In any case it is good to see an objective view of our country from a neutral observer.

The food is expensive but the quality is good and better than I found in the States. I like the rain and the wind myself. If you have the right clothing and a belly full of good food, the weather isn’t a problem. Great when walking the dogs. You meet less people and have the countryside to yourself. Tree cover, which we need to replenish throughout the country, helps enormously when out walking in all types of weather. And coming in to a nice fire whether at home, at a neighbours or the pub warms the soul. There is something about huddling around a fire with others whether in silence or conversation that is lost with modern radiator heated homes.

I spent a while living in a very hot climate. The novelty of the heat and sun wore off after a few months for me. Us Gaels aren’t made for it.

Thanks for your perspective.

Matt Damon was a Covid refugee in Ireland as well, so you’re in good company. Also an uncle of mine from Waterford who’s been in Melbourne for decades.
We cant do much about the weather but the other things you mention are certainly manageable in a properly run country.
Fair winds to you on your travels

Thanks very much for your great honesty. Food and booze prices, the govt driving their own neo liberal agenda, the police, country on the verge of sovereign collapse. When the Irish say that, the government call us the far right.

I advise the Americans to stop coming, for their own safety. Ireland has become a crime ridden kip. This tourist came for a nice holiday but Ireland gave her a broken arm and head injuries from the mugging, her cash stolen along with the sheer shock. Not the first American tourist who was attacked. It is despicable. I wish her a very speedy recovery. This is the worst government we ever had and the cause of all the trouble. They are a bad lot and the minister for justice is at the bottom of the pile. She’s the worst. She is allowing illegals who came here under a false name and false pretences, without papers, to become legal. They are then eligible to apply for jobs in the police. It’s as corrupt as that.

More cultural enrichment I would imagine. When are we going to put a stop to this madness?

First time I have ever heard of an incident like this in Killarney but maybe it’s coincidental and not related to the current state of the town. I was there on Saturday. One of the first things I saw when coming from Cork was a group of migrant males hanging around near the petrol station across from that migrant hotel.

Tourists have being robbed for years In Killarney

Would you support a decision by Ireland to copy the UK's "Rwanda Plan", under which asylum seekers are sent to the safe - but third world - African country instead of being allowed to remain here?
