In what Zimbabwean media have described as a “dramatic turn of events”, a man wanted for three murders in Zimbabwe, who was reportedly living in an asylum centre in Ireland under a false name, has now allegedly been deported to Mozambique. His extradition is now being sought from that country by the Zimbabwean police.
The Sunday Mail first reported that Peter Dube, the suspect in the murder of three people in Zimbabwe, was in Ireland where he was claiming to be a refugee and living in the Red Cow asylum centre in Dublin. As Gript reported in May:
The Sunday Mail in Zimbabwe reported that Peter Dube, who is sought on charges of murdering three people, was a fugitive who had left the country for South Africa and then changed identity when relocating to Ireland where he sought asylum.
Police spokesman Assistant Commissioner, Paul Nyathi, told the Sunday Mail that Dube allegedly “relocated to Ireland, where he sought asylum”.
Dube is alleged to have shot dead the suspected lover of his second wife Nyasha Nharingo in Gweru in April 2021.
Nyasha’s friend Gamuchirai Mudungwe was also shot and killed in the deadly incident, and her sister Nyaradzo also died in the hospital after being shot.
Police Chief Nyathi claimed that the Zimbabwean authorities had been in touch with Interpol and that Dube was now on the ‘Red Notice’ list, which is a request to law enforcement worldwide to locate and provisionally arrest a person pending extradition, surrender, or similar legal action.
However, the Red List at that time did not appear to have Dube listed – nor was he listed under an alibi the Zimbabwean authorities believed he was using.
The Gardai did not provide any information in response to queries about Dube, but then in June, the suspect appeared before the Irish courts on charges related to his time in Ireland.
Now Zimbabwean media are reporting that Dube’s false identity in Ireland was accepted by the Irish authorities who have deported him to Mozambique. The Sunday Mail claims:
“In a dramatic turn of events, fugitive killer Peter Dube, who was recently convicted in Ireland for violating immigration laws, has been deported to Mozambique after he claimed to be a citizen of that country.”
Dube is wanted by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) in connection with two fatal shootings and an attempted murder case in Gweru on April 23, 2021.
The paper says that “after the shootings, he reportedly fled to South Africa, before relocating to Eswatini, where he changed his identity to Xolile Mtsali.”
From Eswatini, he travelled to Ireland, where he sought asylum.
He was then arrested in Ireland on June 14 this year after The Sunday Mail exposé of how he and his family changed identities before seeking asylum.
He was nabbed at a refugee facility in Dublin, before being convicted by a Dublin District Court for violating that country’s immigration laws.
Sources said during his court appearance, Dube claimed to be a Mozambican national and produced an identity document as proof of his nationality.
The new alias he assumed could not be immediately established.
“He enjoyed the benefit of doubt, as the Zimbabwe authorities took long to prove that Dube was a Zimbabwean,” said a source.
“When the documentation was later delivered to the Irish authorities, it was too late as Dube had already been deported to Mozambique.
“The warrant of arrest request that was issued by Zimbabwe was then overtaken by events, as there was need to prove that Dube was a Zimbabwean national before he could be repatriated back to Zimbabwe.
It is believed that Dube “took advantage of the red tape in processing the documents and claimed to be Mozambican, since he also had some identification particulars of that country.”
Now the Zimbabwean police are seeking his extradition from Mozambique. They say that his false identity documents were produced by a syndicate operating in South Africa and Eswatin, and that Dube used these fake documents when he appeared in court in Ireland.
