The people of Saxony Anhalt in eastern Germany have spoken. They ubiquitously rejected neoliberalism.
35-year-old AFD candidate for Saxony Anhalt, Ulrich Siegmund surged ahead in the local election with 43.8% of the vote. The Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU) who led Saxony-Anhalt for 24 years, suffered a humiliating defeat – polling at just 17.2% thereby losing about half its support. The centre-left Social Democrats polled 9.3%, the Greens 8.9% and the Left Party 8.6%, – each winning eight seats apiece. Turnout was very high with over 150,000 extra voters in the state of around 2 million people.
