A suspect in the deadly shooting of activist and conservative leader Charlie Kirk has been taken into custody, US President Donald Trump has said.
The New York Post said that President Trump named 22-year-old, Tyler Robinson, as the suspect, and that his father has turned the suspect in.
“I think, with a high degree of certainty, we have him,” Trump told “Fox & Friends” during a live interview at the cable giant’s Manhattan studio, saying he heard just minutes before his 8 a.m. interview.
The suspect is in the custody of Utah state law enforcement, after a 24-hour manhunt following Wednesday’s shooting, where Mr Kirk was shot by a sniper during an appearance at Utah Valley University.
The murder of Mr Kirk, a popular and engaging activist who was influential in the Trump administration, sent shockwaves around the world.
In Utah, law enforcement officials said the shot was believed to have been fired at Mr Kirk by a person on the roof of a building from a distance of more than 200 metres.
Investigators tracked the person’s movements on campus, through stairwells and across a roof, police told a news conference yesterday.
Video released by authorities Thursday captured the person they described as the shooter running across a building’s roof and descending onto a grassy area below. The person can then be seen walking past a parking lot toward a busy road.
