Gardaí investigating a fatal arson attack in Waterford City have arrested a man and a woman in connection with the deaths of four members of the English family.
The man, aged in his 20s, and the woman, aged in her 30s, were arrested on Thursday afternoon on suspicion of offences under section 72 of the Criminal Justice Act 2006, which relates to offences involving criminal organisations. Both are being detained under section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act 2007 at a Garda station in the Eastern Region.
The fire broke out at 7 Birch Avenue, Birchwood, shortly after 5 am on Tuesday, 13 October. Gardaí are treating the incident as a multiple murder.
Two children were taken to Children’s Health Ireland (CHI) Crumlin with serious injuries. Their condition remains critical.
Post-mortem examinations on the four people who died have been completed, but Gardaí say the results are not being released for operational reasons. Family Liaison Officers are supporting the bereaved family, who have been kept updated on developments.
The house remains a crime scene and is undergoing a technical examination by the Garda Technical Bureau.
