The Sunday Times’ Irish edition carried an intriguing report last week on the PSNI and MI5’s embrace of de-banking techniques to combat militant republicans, suggesting that such tactics may be inching their way south into the Republic.
From the closure of bank accounts, to targeted DMs over Spotify urging dissidents to abandon paramilitarism, as well as cancelled car insurance policies and blocked welfare payments, de-banking and other forms of deplatforming have become an established component of the counter-terrorism toolkit.
