Everyone focused on the farming comments. Understandably so. Leo Varadkar’s declaration on Matt Cooper’s Path to Power podcast that what serves farmers is “by and large not in the interests of Ireland as a nation” was provocative enough to generate a week’s worth of outrage, parliamentary party rebellions, and a grudging semi-apology from the great man himself.
Fine Gael TDs representing rural constituencies queued up to express their fury. Agriculture bodies issued statements. Varadkar later apologised, sort of.
