The hurling final this year was at the tail end of an extremely hot spell. There was a time when city dwellers of Ireland would welcome this unusually warm weather, but the media in Ireland has shifted its summer-hot-spell story from one of beach relaxation and summer sunshine to one of climate Armageddon.
“Unprecedented” or “record temperatures” are terms that we see most often in the news script, even if they are then qualified by timing or duration or some other factor. Unprecedented is something “that has never happened, been done or been known before” according to the Oxford Dictionary Definition.
