The first news headline I saw on RTÉ this week was “One killed, dozens injured, as quake hits western Turkey,” and it got me thinking about just how much of what we read each day is, for the average person, entirely gratuitous and morbid.
Of course, we should never be indifferent to human suffering, and it’s obviously good to be broadly informed about the world’s affairs – that goes without saying. But there’s a difference between being informed, and endlessly marinating in misery that we can do nothing about.
