State doesn’t want “too much” accountability for NGOs, says TD

State-funded NGOs should have their funding “audited” and be subject to “forensic examination,” a Fianna Fáil TD has said.

In an exclusive interview with Gript, Deputy John McGuinness – who previously served as Chair of both the Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and the Public Accounts Committee – was asked about the legacy of the now-defunct NGO Benefacts.

NGOs should receive no state funding but take their case to the public. If they can show they are genuine charities helping people in real need they will receive adequate public suppport. If not, they will collapse. The public will then see those who are paying their CEOs large salaries and using most funding for administration and dump them. This will also prevent our government wasting taxes on their favourite NGOs.

Good point! If Money laundering is banned, then NGOs would be the first to be banned!

NGOs are a government inside a government, looking at the march on the weekend in Dublin. all NGOs and then RTE the biggest one of all in my eyes, reporting that there were thoooosands at the march. Fn lies.

Agree! If NGOs were not receiving state funding, then any ‘necessary tasks’ would be carried out by civil servants, who take an oath to the republic and would cost a hell of a lot less! Apart from that…. the NGOs just wouldn’t exist without funding and our taxes would be used for us, and not against us!

The NGO sector has become an out-of-control tyranny. They control the Government; the Government answers to them and not vice-versa.

If they dont, then stop giving them our money. We dont want our money funding marxists.

The Government should be accountable to the people! With NGOs, they are creating unelected government departments that are not accountable to the people. In fact, NGOs acting on behalf of government is unconstitutional in a democratic republic… because it removes the power from the peoüple and uses it against the people!

It beggars belief the National WOMENS’Council wants to erase women from the Constitution

Should NGOs like NWCI be allowed to spend money they receive from the Government on political campaigns?
