Spanish political party VOX is threatening to take legal action against Spain’s Leftwing environmentalist government if it pushes ahead with policies it describes as “climate fanaticism.”
The comments were made in response to Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s “energy saving plan” announced earlier this month. The plan will prevent offices, shops and other businesses from setting their air conditioning below 27 degrees Celsius in the summer, and not raise the heating more than 19 degrees Celsius in the winter.
This will be legally binding, and is being done to combat soaring energy prices and fight fossil fuel use for green environmental reasons.
The policy is to be imposed even on local regional governments – including ones where VOX is in control.
As a result, the party has slammed the national government for trying to make regional authorities “submit to the dictatorship of a sectarian and reductionist environmentalism, that deceptively opposes the environment with progress and well-being.”
As reported by Spanish news site El Mundo, VOX urged the government to “immediately adopt policies that reduce our now growing energy dependence,” and “immediately repeal of the regulations that prevent the exploration and extraction of our resources.”
The party says that the Climate Change Law approved last week has created a “critical situation” within the country, and is urging the revisiting of Spain’s energy policy.
