One of the first major contracts to be awarded by the State to a private hospitality business for the accommodation of applicants for International Protection through IPAS was to Treacy’s Hotel in Carrickmacross. The hotel has remained in the ownership of three siblings Patrick, John and Kathleen Treacy through a holding company called Leah Unicorn Unlimited.
The hotel began to accommodate people in direct provision in 2018 but asylum seekers in the hotel were moved for a time in March 2019 apparently in preparation for the tourist season. However, that switch to tourist accommodation never happened and the asylum contract was renewed.
