The US Supreme Court has overturned the Roe v Wade decision which interpreted the US Constitution in 1973 as providing a right to abortion.
The decision – already flagged in a leaked draft from the Supreme Court earlier this year, will leave individual states free to legislate on abortion.
The court, in a 6-3 ruling, upheld a Mississippi law that bans abortion after 15 weeks – and held that Roe v Wade was wrongly decided because the U.S. Constitution makes no specific mention of abortion rights.
Today’s ruling will be warmly welcomed by pro-life groups and activists for women’s choices – but strongly opposed by abortion supporters and activists.

Held: The Constitution does not confer a right to abortion; Roe and Casey are overruled; and the authority to regulate abortion is returned to the people and their elected representatives.
