The number of people in emergency accommodation is over 340% higher than it was for the same period ten years ago, figures from the Department of Housing show.
14,429 people are now in emergency accommodation according to figures hosted by Focus Ireland for the month of July.
The number of children in emergency accommodation this time ten years ago shows that there has been an over 480% increase in the number of children living in emergency accommodation.
4,401 children – the second highest number on record for the category – are now in emergency accommodation compared to 746 in July of 2014. The highest recorded number of children in emergency accommodation of the past ten years was 4,404 – a figure from June of this year.
In July 2014 a total of 3,258 people were in emergency accommodation including a total of 746 children.
The numbers for July 2014 represent the highest number of people reliant on emergency accommodation on record with 126 more people than was recorded the previous month.
The total number of adults in emergency accommodation is a record 10,028 individuals compared to 9,899 recorded in June.
Focus Ireland says the above figures, published by the Department of Housing, identify “the number of people utilising State-funded emergency homeless accommodation on a regional and county basis in the last week of every month.”
The charity says the official figures “only record those in state emergency homeless accommodation, but discounts those that are in ‘own-door’ temporary accommodation, domestic violence refuges, asylum seekers, people who are sleeping rough, and the very many who are ‘hidden homeless’ and staying with family or friends in insecure housing.”
