It’s important to start this piece by recognising the pollster: Ireland Thinks is, in this writer’s estimation, the one polling company that consistently asks interesting questions on cultural and social controversies that other pollsters are somewhat reluctant to touch, or perhaps don’t see commercial value in. And thus, thanks to their head polling man, Kevin Cunningham, and the Editors of the Sunday Independent who commissioned him, we have the relatively rare chance to see what the public actually think about one of those storms in a media teacup that occasionally take up news for a week.
The results, it is fair to say, show that the balance of public opinion and the balance of media opinion are two very different things:
