There is a reason that societies enact laws: Laws are designed to put reasonable and moderate constraints on the behaviour of individuals in order to benefit society at large. This is the theory behind both good laws, and stupid ones: The laws against copyright theft, for example, are designed to protect people with good ideas from having them stolen, thus encouraging and incentivising people to come up with good ideas. The laws against politicians putting advertisements on television are designed to stop rich people buying elections. The laws against hate speech, stupid though they may be, are at least nominally intended to stop people from feeling hated in their own country.
But ask yourself the following question: Are the laws against dangerous driving designed to stop Gardai pursuing criminals? Is that what they were intended to do, when the Oireachtas passed them? Because the DPP appears to think so:
