Relations between Poland and Ukraine are plunging following Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s decision to name an operations centre for the country’s special forces after the “heroes of the UPA” – a second world war era military unit responsible for massacring tens of thousands of ethnic Poles.
In response to the controversial decision, Polish President Karol Nawrocki stripped Zelensky of the ‘Order of the White Eagle’, the Polish state’s highest honour, which was awarded to the Ukrainian president by Nawrocki’s predecessor, Andrzej Duda, in 2023.
