I’ve long been fascinated by the concept of Pari shōkōgun or ‘Paris Syndrome’. Don’t worry if you haven’t come across the term before, it’s a bit niche as such things go.
‘Paris syndrome’ is a severe form of culture shock experienced mainly by Japanese tourists visiting Paris. Its cause is the stark contrast between the idealised image of the city of lights many Japanese people hold in their hearts, and the reality they are confronted with when they actually get there.
