Last Sunday was Mothers’ Day and, in the packed shopping centre I visited on Saturday afternoon, Dunnes was doing a roaring trade in premium-priced bouquets of flowers, and pretty houseplants in pastel-coloured pots, and extra-fancy boxes of handmade chocolates.
In a gift shop, someone had made uniquely Irish ‘Love you Mam’ and “Lá na Máithreacha Sona do mo Mham’ cards available. They were almost sold out. For most Irish people, mothers’ day is important. Restaurants are booked out weeks in advance. It might be a Hallmark invention and all a bit schmaltzy but mammies are very important, and why shouldn’t they get a day in recognition of their unending service, especially given the resounding smack of a wooden spoon they handed the government last year when they tried to take us out of the Constitution.
