In the aftermath of the overdue vindication of Ryan Casey this week, I have been thinking back to how the Irish media disgraced itself in the aftermath of the worst moment of that young man’s life.
It is now clear that the all-consuming hysteria that swept through Official Ireland after the murder of Aisling Murphy on 12th January 2022 was wholly dependent on the fiction that an Irishman was responsible. This hysteria instantly vanished once a foreigner was charged with her murder. That, far more than the murder itself, foul though it was, serves to confirm the following essential truth.
