A growing body of research is challenging a long-standing public narrative about violence against transgender Americans and instead suggesting that intimate partner violence, not ‘hate crime’, is the dominant force behind transgender homicides.
While advocacy groups have often described an “epidemic of violence” against transgender people, pointing to annual counts of homicide victims as evidence of a hate-driven crisis, data analysis published by City Journal claims that transgender people are less likely to be murdered than the rest of the population, that most transgender people are murdered by members of their own race, and that intimate partner violence, not ‘hate crime’, is the leading identified motive for the majority of the documented murders.
